A bit of history - I usually do the work myself on my own projects and couple examples are below.
The first is a very streetable 1989 Ford Mustang that ran 8.66 at 162mph and was powered by a stroked 5.0 liter and Vortech supercharger. It was truly a street car - I campaigned it in the True Street class where the rules required you to drive 50 miles and then make 3 back-to-back passes, who ever had the fastest average of the 3 passes was the winner. The rules only allowed for a rear tire change after the 50 mile trip - no changes to anything else; no adding fuel, no raising the hood, no cooling down, etc. I was the True Street National Champion for 3 consecutive years in the mid 1990's with it. I also won a few Fun Ford Street Outlaw races and a couple of the Muscle Mustangs Magazine Shootouts during that time.
I was burnt out after spending 4 years criss-crossing the states while racing the Mustang, so I sold it along with my Saleen Mustang, and bought an 1999 Chevrolet S10 Xtreme. I swore to myself that I wouldn't modify the S10, but after about 6 months, I started swapping out the 4.3 liter V6 for a 5.7 liter LT4 V8 from a Corvette. The LT4 was modified with the usual hot rod gadgets - ported heads, bigger valves, cam, etc. The truck was great fun and I ending up running 11.50's with it while hazing the rear tires the entire quarter mile.
I sold the S10 because it basically stayed in the garage - the last year I had it I only put 700 miles on it.
I really don't know how I ended up with a Subaru after that - I guess I was just looking for something different. During the first 2 years of owning the STi, the VF39 was swapped for a TD06H-20G and then the 20G was swapped for a APS SR55. The car ended up running 11.50's at 122mph with the SR55.
In May of 2006 I did a complete black WRX Limited interior swap and updated the steering wheel and console to 2006 STi pieces. I installed a complete set of Defi gauges, along with a few other things. In November of 2006 the leather WRX seats were removed and new black leather Recaro Sports took their place. At that point the interior was pretty much complete and the itch for more power was really getting bad.
I just don't have the free time like I used to, so over the course of those 2 years I had developed a level of trust with Chris and Kenny at Gillman Subaru North in Houston and with the guys at MZM in Austin, to do the things I didn't have time to do or just didn't feel like doing myself.
Both the TD06H-20G and the APS SR55 had been tuned by the guys at MZM, so after visting the shop one day, I ordered a complete Cosworth setup from MZM and spent time there in October of 2006 while we installed everything.
For better fuel and timing control, a HKS F-Con V Pro was installed while doing the engine swap, in preparation for the new fuel injectors and turbo that would be installed in the near future.
I drove the car when I had a chance and finally got the new engine broken-in at the end of January 2007. By this time I had complete trust in MZM, so I dropped off the car and to let them finish up everything.
The car was back to together, buttoned up and put on the dyno. We discovered that there was excessive pre-turbo back pressure and we had to wait for a new turbine housing to arrive, so the car wasn't tuned to it's full potential. In the meantime I was curious to see what the car would run and it put down a respectable 11.33 at 127.92mph. While waiting for the new exhaust housing to arrive, D-Sport magazine did a feature on the car that appeared in October 2007 - they nicknamed the car "Silver Sleeper" and the name just kind of stuck.
The new turbine housing finally arrived and really allowed the car to breathe. MZM swapped the housings and strapped the car to the dyno once again. This time it made 540whp at 27psi.
With everything finally in place, the car ran a 10.57 at 134.72mph and all was good. For now. This is the car in the exact same state it was in when it ran the 10.5 second quarter mile pass. I drove to the track, made the passes, and drove it home.
