My name is Devan Daugherty. I am a 17 year old junior at Kuna High School in Kuna, Idaho. I am the proud owner of a 1991 Subaru Legacy Sport Sedan. I came to love Subaru's back in 2004 at the age of 14. My father, Dale Daugherty gave me this car to be a safe, fun, and reliable car for my up coming high school years. Little did we know that this car would end up being not only my pride and joy, but also the flagship for his new business.
My dad purchased this car back in 2003 at a local auto auction for $300. At the time it arrived at our shop it was covered in mold, and had a blown automatic transmission. We were very new to Subaru's at this point and knew nothing of this car's many capabilities. I had been a fan of Subaru's dominance in the WRC for years before we started modding my Legacy. My dad I were lucky enough to attend a Rallycross at the Washington County Fairgrounds setup by Oregon Rally Group in June 2005. That is where we had the privilege of meeting Kelly Gibner formerly of RalliTEK Subaru Performance. Kelly told me about the forum legacycentral.org and said that was the place to look and see that the rest of the world is doing with these forgotten rally rebels.
Several months and a few dollars later we came across a JDM EJ20G taken out of a JDM Legacy RS touring wagon. A few months after that we came across a JDM 4:44 5-speed transmission taken from a Legacy GT Spec-B. In the summer of 2006 we started the tear down of the legacy in its stock form. First to go was the worn out 2.2T SOHC engine. That has been a pretty controversial decision amongst the Legacy Turbo community, but with our lack of time, we decided to do a straight up swap. now equipped with a DOHC turbocharged and intercooled motor, it was ready for its maiden voyage amongst the rest of the modded Subaru's seen throughout the northwest.
Since the spring of 2006 I have been competing in Autocross and Drag racing events in my hometown of Kuna, Idaho, as well as raced at PIR in Portland. This car has made quite an impression amongst my fellow high school drag team here in Idaho. The car has undergone many suspension, drivetrain, braking, and cosmetic upgrades over the last year or two. I still have many dreams and aspirations for this project.
This was all built by my dad and I, the father and son team at Northwest Subaru Service in Portland, Oregon. It has been a fun ride that will probably never end. I am glad that I got the chance to share my car's journey with you all. We have come this far with the car. I believe it is time to share my project with the rest of the world. Thanks for reading!
Went to PRE while over Spring Break to see how the car was coming along. Tuned at a conservative 16psi. Quite happy with the numbers! Enough power for me at the moment!
